Community Center

The purpose of the Homer Cole Community Center is to provide facilities, and programs, to enhance the welfare of the population of Pittsburg, KS, to share information and offer varied social, educational, and cultural activities.

The Community Center is a non-for-profit organization, governed by a board of directors, and jointly funded by the City of Pittsburg and Crawford County, Kansas.

The Homer Cole Community Center has been part of the community for over 20 years. Providing area residents with clean affordable options when hosting events such as:

• wedding receptions
• bridal and baby showers
• anniversary and birthday parties
• and other occasions when a meeting facility has been needed.

Along with being available to the public for rent, we also offer a variety of events like our bi-monthly senior dance, bingo and other entertaining games.

The Community Center is also privileged to host Weight Watchers and Mary Kay Cosmetics as events weekly.

Homer Cole

The namesake of the community center, Homer Cole, played an active role in promoting the funding and development of the facilities that bear his name.

In 1987, a committee of citizens, in conjunction with the city commissioners, began investigating the need for a community senior center.  This committee included Claudia Gill, Pete Murry, Leland Boone and Jim Day, with Homer Cole being the designated liaison to the city commissioners.

After research and grant applications had been processed, matching funds were needed to make this vision of a facility to serve the community a reality.  A fund-raising program was initiated with funds coming from many sources, though perhaps most visibly, a tent outside Wal-Mart manned by Homer Cole, through which approximately $31,000 dollars were raised from about 500 known sources.

Land was donated by Gene Bicknell, and materials from multiple sources.

Homer Cole has served on the board for the Community Center and as an active member of other activities in the Pittsburg community.
